🔥🔴 DID CARRICK’S SUBSTITUTIONS COST MANCHESTER UNITED TWO POINTS AT EVERTON? 😱
Manchester United appeared to be heading towards a crucial away victory at Everton, but a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser changed everything.
Benjamin Šeško had seemingly put United in control with a late header, giving Michael Carrick’s side a 2-1 advantage and putting the visitors within touching distance of three valuable Premier League points.
However, Everton refused to give up.
In the dying moments, Ainsley Maitland-Niles produced a spectacular long-range finish to beat Senne Lammens and rescue a 2-2 draw for the home side.
For United, it felt like two points had slipped through their fingers. 💔
And once again, attention has turned towards Carrick’s tactical decisions during the closing stages.
🔴 THE SUBSTITUTION THAT HAS EVERYONE TALKING
Carrick made several changes as Manchester United attempted to protect their lead.
Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha were taken off, with Patrick Dorgu and Benjamin Šeško introduced. Later, Kobbie Mainoo and Diogo Dalot made way for Andrey Santos and Leny Yoro, while Noussair Mazraoui replaced Luke Shaw.
On paper, the changes were understandable.
United were leading, Everton were applying pressure, and Carrick clearly wanted fresh legs and additional defensive security.
But the timing and impact of those decisions have sparked plenty of debate among supporters.
⚡ RASHFORD’S WITHDRAWAL
Marcus Rashford had been one of United’s biggest attacking outlets during the match.
His pace gave Everton something to worry about, while his ability to carry the ball forward offered United a way of relieving pressure.
Therefore, seeing him substituted while United were ahead naturally raised questions.
However, Carrick later indicated that Rashford had felt something physically and that removing him was largely a precautionary decision.
That explanation changes the picture.
It would have been risky to leave an uncomfortable player on the pitch simply for tactical reasons, particularly with a long season ahead.
Carrick also highlighted Rashford’s improved sharpness and attacking threat, suggesting the manager was pleased with his contribution.
So perhaps Rashford’s substitution shouldn’t be considered the main reason United failed to win.
🧠 DID UNITED MISS MAINOO AFTER HE LEFT?
The bigger tactical question could arguably be Kobbie Mainoo.
The midfielder played an important role before his substitution and was directly involved in United’s opening goal, providing the assist for Bryan Mbeumo.
Mainoo’s composure in possession can be extremely valuable when a team is trying to manage a lead.
With Everton pushing aggressively for an equaliser, having a midfielder capable of slowing the game down, retaining possession and helping United escape pressure could have been important.
Instead, Carrick brought on Andrey Santos.
From a defensive perspective, introducing fresh legs made sense.
But United appeared to lose some of their control afterwards.
Everton continued attacking, and the match became increasingly frantic.
That naturally raises the question:
Did United surrender too much midfield control when Mainoo was taken off? 👀
🧱 THE DEFENSIVE CHANGES ALSO RAISED QUESTIONS
Carrick didn’t only alter his midfield.
There were also changes to the defensive structure, with Leny Yoro replacing Diogo Dalot and Mazraoui coming on for Luke Shaw.
Interestingly, Shaw had played an important role in United’s second goal, delivering the cross that allowed Šeško to find the net.
His attacking contribution had therefore remained significant even late in the match.
Once he left the pitch, United had to deal with Everton’s continued pressure without one of their key outlets from the left side.
And then came the decisive moment.
A clearance eventually dropped into Maitland-Niles’ path, and the Everton man responded with a sensational strike that flew into the top corner.
There was very little Lammens could do about the quality of the finish.
💥 2-2.
Game over.
🤔 IS IT REALLY FAIR TO BLAME CARRICK?
This is where the debate becomes complicated.
It would be too simplistic to say Carrick’s substitutions alone cost Manchester United the victory.
Everton created numerous opportunities and reportedly finished the match with 18 attempts.
The home side continued attacking until the final whistle, and United ultimately failed to deal with the pressure.
Carrick himself acknowledged that some of United’s late decisions made it more difficult for the team to close out the game.
The players also deserve criticism for failing to manage the final moments better.
When you’re leading 2-1 deep into stoppage time, sometimes the priority has to be simple: stay compact, win second balls, clear danger and don’t give the opposition an opportunity to shoot.
United couldn’t do that.
🔥 TWO POINTS LOST OR ONE POINT GAINED?
For Manchester United supporters, the result will inevitably feel like a defeat.
United were so close to leaving Goodison Park with all three points, only for one spectacular strike to change the outcome.
At the same time, there are lessons for Carrick and his players.
The team needs to become much better at controlling matches when ahead.
Whether that means making different substitutions, keeping key players on the pitch longer, improving possession management or simply defending better, United must find a solution.
Because if this becomes a recurring problem, dropped points could quickly become costly.
🔴 THE BIG QUESTION FOR UNITED FANS
So, who was ultimately responsible for Manchester United’s failure to beat Everton?
Was Kobbie Mainoo’s substitution the moment United lost control?
Was taking Rashford off a mistake?
Did the late defensive reshuffle weaken the team?
Or was the real problem simply United’s inability to defend Everton’s final attack?
