🔴 Carlos Baleba: £70m Masterstroke or Manchester United’s Biggest Gamble of the Summer?
Manchester United’s decision to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton was arguably one of the biggest statements of their summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old Cameroon international arrived at Old Trafford in a deal worth up to £70 million, with £65m guaranteed and a further £5m potentially payable in add-ons. United confirmed the transfer on August 25, handing Baleba a five-year contract.
Now that the transfer window has closed, the question is no longer whether United should sign Baleba.
The real question is much bigger:
Was spending £70m on Baleba the right decision?
In my opinion, yes — but the signing will only be judged a success if United give him the right environment to develop.
🔥 Why United Wanted Baleba
Manchester United desperately needed to rebuild their midfield.
Casemiro’s departure left a significant physical and defensive gap in the squad, while injuries and inconsistency have made the midfield an area that needed serious attention.
United eventually addressed that problem by bringing in Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba.
The three signings cost the club around £155m combined, making midfield the clear priority of United’s summer recruitment strategy.
Baleba, however, is the signing that stands out.
He brings something different.
He has the physical strength to compete in Premier League midfield battles, the ability to recover possession and the athleticism to cover large areas of the pitch.
That could become extremely important for Michael Carrick.
💪 Baleba Could Give United the Midfield Protection They’ve Been Missing
For years, Manchester United have struggled to consistently control the middle of the pitch.
Too often, opponents have been able to run through midfield, especially when United lose possession.
Baleba’s arrival could help address that.
His defensive work, physical presence and ability to cover ground should allow United’s more creative players to operate with greater freedom.
Imagine a midfield where Baleba provides the defensive security while Bruno Fernandes and other attacking players are given more freedom to create.
That is the kind of balance United supporters have been waiting to see.
🧠 But Baleba Is Not a Finished Product
This is where expectations need to be managed.
At 22, Baleba is still developing.
United have not signed a finished superstar who is guaranteed to dominate every Premier League midfield from his first appearance.
They have invested heavily in a player they believe can become an elite midfielder.
That means mistakes will happen.
There will be matches where he loses possession, picks up unnecessary cards or struggles against experienced opponents.
United fans will need patience.
If supporters expect £70m performances immediately, the pressure could become counterproductive.
🚑 The Injury Situation Is Important
Unfortunately, Baleba’s Manchester United debut has been delayed by an ankle injury.
Michael Carrick indicated that the midfielder could be ready within roughly 10–14 days, putting the Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton on September 16 or the Premier League trip to Fulham on September 20 among the possible opportunities for his debut.
That Brighton possibility would be particularly interesting.
Baleba could potentially face his former club in his first appearance for United.
For now, though, the priority should simply be getting him completely fit rather than rushing him back.
🔴 Was £70m Too Much?
This is probably the biggest debate surrounding the transfer.
£70m is a huge amount of money.
But Premier League clubs routinely demand enormous fees for young players with potential, especially when those players are already proven at the highest level of English football.
Baleba also fits a position United desperately needed to strengthen.
So rather than asking whether £70m sounds expensive, I think the better question is:
Will Baleba become a £70m-level midfielder over the next few seasons?
That answer obviously cannot be known yet.
But the potential is there.
⚠️ United Still Have Another Problem
There is one major concern with United’s summer strategy.
They invested heavily in midfield but failed to bring in a new senior left-back or another major defensive reinforcement.
The Guardian described the window as one dominated by midfield recruitment, with Baleba, Santos and Tielemans arriving while United failed to strengthen the left-back position.
That means Baleba could be asked to provide even more defensive protection.
If United’s backline struggles, his presence in front of the defence could become extremely important.
But one midfielder cannot fix every defensive problem.
👀 What Should United Fans Expect?
I wouldn’t expect Baleba to immediately become the best midfielder at Manchester United.
Instead, I would look for gradual improvement.
His first objective should be establishing himself as a reliable defensive presence.
Then he needs to improve his passing, decision-making and ability to dictate the tempo of matches.
If he manages to develop those aspects of his game while maintaining his physical qualities, United could have a seriously complete midfielder on their hands.
🏆 My Verdict: 8/10 Signing
Personally, I would give the Baleba transfer 8/10.
The fee is substantial, and there are still unanswered questions about whether he can handle the enormous pressure that comes with playing for Manchester United.
But the profile makes sense.
He’s young, physically gifted, experienced in the Premier League and arriving at a position United desperately needed to strengthen.
Most importantly, United aren’t simply signing him for what he is today.
They’re betting on what he can become.
And if Carlos Baleba develops into the dominant No. 6 many believe he can become, Manchester United supporters could look back at this £70m investment and say:
“That was money well spent.” 🔴🔥
