🚨🔴 Michael Carrick Still Has the Backing of Manchester United’s Hierarchy Despite Growing Pressure
Michael Carrick’s position as Manchester United head coach has come under increased scrutiny following a difficult start to the 2026/27 season, but reports indicate that the club’s hierarchy has not lost faith in him.
United have endured a turbulent few weeks, with disappointing results, injuries, transfer concerns and the ongoing situation surrounding academy prospect JJ Gabriel all adding to the pressure around Old Trafford. The latest defeat to Brighton in the Carabao Cup — after United had taken a 2–0 lead — only intensified questions about Carrick’s future.
However, according to a Manchester Evening News report, there is currently no sense at Old Trafford that an immediate managerial change is imminent. The report states that Carrick continues to have the backing of chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.
🔴 Carrick Still Has the Support of Berrada and Wilcox
Carrick’s relationship with United’s senior football leadership is an important part of the current situation.
Berrada and Wilcox were heavily involved in the decision-making process when Ruben Amorim was dismissed in January. Carrick was subsequently given the opportunity to take charge, initially on an interim basis, before his performances convinced the club to make him the permanent head coach.
By May, reports indicated that United had decided to continue with Carrick after an internal process led by Wilcox. The club ultimately handed him a contract running until 2028.
That history matters now because the club is not dealing with a manager who was simply appointed a few weeks ago. Carrick has already established a relationship with the hierarchy and previously delivered the results that convinced them he was the right person to lead the team.
📉 But the Current Results Cannot Be Ignored
The support from the hierarchy does not mean Carrick is completely free from pressure.
United have lost three of their first six matches this season, while their performances have raised questions about tactical decisions, defensive organisation and the team’s ability to manage games.
The Brighton defeat was particularly damaging.
United led 2–0 but eventually suffered a comeback defeat, creating further frustration among supporters and increasing scrutiny on the manager.
The Manchester Evening News reports that Carrick is now under pressure to produce results, even though the club is not currently indicating that a change is imminent.
That distinction is important: backing from the hierarchy and pressure from poor results can exist at the same time.
🧠 Why United May Still Be Giving Carrick Time
One factor reportedly working in Carrick’s favour is the belief that some of United’s problems extend beyond the head coach.
The Manchester Evening News has pointed to several mitigating circumstances, including injuries, transfer-window concerns and controversial moments that have affected recent matches.
The report also highlights Carrick’s calm approach and his refusal to publicly blame the club’s recruitment strategy or other individuals for the team’s difficulties.
That approach is consistent with how Carrick has conducted himself since taking charge.
Rather than publicly distancing himself from difficult decisions, he has generally accepted responsibility and attempted to keep attention on the team.
Whether that will ultimately be enough depends heavily on results.
🔴 Carrick’s Previous Success Still Matters
It is also worth remembering that the current struggles come after a very different period under Carrick.
After replacing Amorim, Carrick helped United recover during the second half of the previous campaign and secured Champions League qualification. The Guardian reported in May that Carrick’s results had impressed both Wilcox and Berrada, with United earning 33 points from 15 Premier League matches under him at that stage.
That successful spell was a major reason United chose to make him the permanent head coach.
The club therefore has evidence from Carrick’s own tenure that he can deliver results at Manchester United.
The question now is whether he can reproduce that consistency during the current difficult period.
⚽ The Next Matches Could Be Crucial
With United facing Fulham next, the upcoming fixtures could become particularly important for Carrick.
The MEN report notes that results will ultimately determine how long Carrick remains in charge and that he needs positive results to quieten the growing noise around the club.
That means the situation is not necessarily as simple as “Carrick is safe” or “Carrick is about to be sacked.”
The current picture is more complicated.
The hierarchy reportedly continues to support him, but Manchester United is a results-driven environment. Continued poor results would naturally increase the pressure, regardless of the manager’s relationship with the club’s executives.
🔥 What This Means for Manchester United
For now, the available reporting suggests that United’s leadership is giving Carrick the opportunity to turn things around rather than immediately searching for his replacement.
That gives the manager an important window to address the team’s weaknesses, improve performances and restore confidence.
But the pressure will remain.
Carrick has already experienced the difference between being supported by the hierarchy and being judged by results. At Manchester United, both realities exist simultaneously.
The coming weeks could therefore be decisive in determining whether the current crisis becomes a temporary setback or develops into a much bigger managerial issue.
For now, though, the message from the reports is clear: Michael Carrick still has the backing of Manchester United’s hierarchy, despite the growing pressure surrounding his position.
