Manchester United could reportedly hand Lisandro MartÃnez a new contract if the Argentine defender can stay fit and maintain strong performances throughout the season.
The club are expected to activate the one-year extension already included in MartÃnez’s current contract before making a final decision on improved terms and a longer deal.
And honestly, I think this is the right approach.
There is no question about MartÃnez’s quality when he is fully fit. Since arriving at Old Trafford, he has shown the aggression, passing ability, mentality and leadership that made him such an important part of Manchester United’s defence.
The biggest concern has always been availability.
MartÃnez has suffered several significant injuries during his United career, so giving him a long-term improved contract immediately would carry a level of risk. The club should first see whether he can put together a consistent run of games without another major setback.
The early signs this season are encouraging.
MartÃnez even got on the scoresheet in United’s impressive 4–0 Champions League victory over Sabah, adding to what was a strong defensive performance from the team.
If he stays fit, performs consistently and proves that he can be relied upon week after week, then I believe Lisandro MartÃnez deserves a new contract at Manchester United.
But United should make him earn it.
Quality? Absolutely.
Mentality? Absolutely.
Long-term fitness? That’s the question.
If MartÃnez can answer that final question this season, I would have no problem seeing him remain at Old Trafford for several more years. 🔴🔥
