🔴 Manchester United Fans: If You Could Choose ONE Manager to Build Around, Who Would It Be?
Manchester United have gone through a remarkable amount of managerial change since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Erik ten Hag and Rúben Amorim have all tried to restore United to the top of English football.
Now, with Michael Carrick in charge, the debate has returned to one familiar question:
What if Manchester United simply chose one manager, gave him genuine backing and allowed him the time to build?
Arsenal’s decision to stick with Mikel Arteta is often brought up in discussions about patience and long-term rebuilding. United fans can therefore ask themselves a hypothetical question: if the club could go back and choose ONE of Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Erik ten Hag, Rúben Amorim or Michael Carrick to build around, who would they choose?
🔴 Ole Gunnar Solskjær — The United DNA
Solskjær remains one of the most debated post-Ferguson managers.
The Norwegian understood Manchester United from both sides. He had been a player at the club, knew the culture and developed a strong connection with supporters.
His Premier League record was also respectable. According to Premier League statistics, Solskjær recorded 56 wins, 29 draws and 24 defeats in 109 league matches, averaging 1.81 points per game.
His best league finish was second, while United also reached the Europa League final during his tenure.
However, trophies were ultimately the major missing piece. His reign ended in November 2021 after a difficult run of results.
The question for supporters is whether more patience and stronger structural backing could have changed the story.
🔴 Erik ten Hag — Trophies but inconsistency
Ten Hag arrived from Ajax with a clear tactical identity and quickly delivered silverware.
He won the Carabao Cup in his first season and followed that with the FA Cup in 2024. United also finished third in the Premier League during his first campaign.
But his overall league numbers eventually became a major talking point.
He managed 85 Premier League matches, winning 44, drawing 14 and losing 27, for an average of 1.72 points per game.
His final season became increasingly difficult, and United eventually parted company with him in October 2024.
So the Ten Hag debate is straightforward: did United abandon a manager who had already shown he could win trophies, or had his project genuinely stalled?
🔴 Rúben Amorim — The Tactical Revolution That Never Settled
Amorim arrived with considerable attention because of the success he had enjoyed at Sporting CP.
He brought a completely different tactical system and attempted to reshape United around his preferred 3-4-3 structure.
But the transition proved difficult.
United’s time under Amorim ultimately ended in January 2026, with the club moving on after a turbulent spell.
That leaves an interesting question for supporters: was Amorim simply not given enough time to implement his football, or was the system never going to work at Old Trafford?
There are arguments on both sides.
🔴 Michael Carrick — The Current Project
Then there is Carrick.
Unlike the other three, Carrick’s story has taken a different route. He had already been part of the club’s coaching structure before eventually taking the permanent job.
His interim spell produced enough optimism for United to hand him a longer-term opportunity, and last season he guided the club to third place and Champions League qualification. Reuters reported that he won 12 of his 17 matches during that interim period.
But the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign has created a new debate.
United have struggled for consistency, and Carrick has come under pressure following defeats and disappointing performances. Reuters reported on September 18 that United had lost three of their first six matches in all competitions.
Carrick himself has insisted that his focus remains on improving the team rather than worrying about speculation surrounding his position.
And that is what makes the current debate so interesting.
Carrick is now being asked to prove that last season was the beginning of a genuine project rather than simply a strong temporary run.

🔥 But What If United Had Chosen Differently?
This is where the Arsenal comparison becomes interesting.
Arteta did not transform Arsenal overnight. His project required time, recruitment, tactical changes and difficult decisions.
Manchester United have repeatedly changed direction whenever results became difficult.
One manager arrives with one philosophy.
Another manager comes in and changes the formation.
A new manager arrives and wants different players.
Then the cycle begins again.
The result is that United have often been rebuilding rather than building.
That is why this question to United supporters is worth asking:
If the club had decided to completely back ONE of these four managers and give him the time and resources to develop his project, what might have happened?
Would Solskjær have eventually delivered a major trophy?
Would Ten Hag’s project have developed with more time?
Could Amorim have eventually made his system work?
Or is Carrick the manager United should finally build around?
There is no need for fans to agree.
In fact, disagreement is exactly what makes the debate interesting.
🔴 Four Managers. One Choice.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær — United DNA, strong league record and a second-place finish.
Erik ten Hag — two domestic trophies and a third-place Premier League finish.
Rúben Amorim — a clear tactical identity but a difficult spell at United.
Michael Carrick — a former United player and coach who has already experienced success as United’s head coach and is now trying to establish himself permanently.
Each represents a completely different argument.
So, Manchester United fans…
👇 If YOU were given the power to choose ONE manager to stay at Manchester United and build a long-term project around, just like Arsenal did with Arteta…
Who would you choose?
🔴 OLE
🔴 TEN HAG
🔴 AMORIM
🔴 CARRICK
