Manchester United Are Missing Rashford’s Spark in Attack

Manchester United’s attack has looked noticeably different since Marcus Rashford was forced out through injury.

Before his absence, there was a sense that United’s frontline was beginning to develop a better understanding. Rashford, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were finding ways to combine, interchange positions and create problems for opposing defences.

But without Rashford, that attacking rhythm appears to have disappeared.

The current frontline of Rashford’s replacements alongside Cunha and Mbeumo has struggled to produce the same fluidity. At times, the three forwards look like players who have never played together before, with the movement and link-up play lacking the sharpness United need.

The chemistry is missing

One of the biggest problems has been the lack of understanding between the attacking players.

Cunha and Mbeumo are both talented players, but attacking football is not simply about putting three quality forwards on the pitch. Players need time together to understand each other’s movements, runs and tendencies.

Rashford’s pace also gives United a different dimension.

When he attacks space behind the defence, opponents have to drop deeper. That creates additional room for Cunha to receive the ball between the lines and gives Mbeumo more opportunities to attack from wider positions or move into dangerous areas.

Without that threat, United can sometimes look easier to defend against.

Rashford offers something different

Rashford’s importance isn’t necessarily about scoring in every game. His ability to stretch a defence can be just as valuable.

His pace forces defenders to think twice about pushing forward, while his willingness to run behind the back line can open spaces for his teammates.

That is particularly important when United are facing teams that defend with a compact block.

Cunha can drop deeper and combine with midfielders, while Mbeumo can drift across the attacking line. Rashford’s movement can then provide the vertical threat that keeps defenders uncomfortable.

When that movement disappears, the attack can become more predictable.

Cunha and Mbeumo need time

It would also be unfair to put all the responsibility on Cunha and Mbeumo.

Both players are still developing their understanding of United’s attacking system and each other. Footballers don’t automatically develop perfect chemistry simply because they are talented.

They need matches, training sessions and consistent minutes together.

The more they play alongside one another, the more naturally their movements should become. A pass eventually becomes instinctive because a player already knows where his teammate is going to be.

That understanding is currently missing in several moments.

United need the spark back

This is why Rashford’s return could be so important.

His comeback would give Michael Carrick another attacking option and, more importantly, restore a dynamic that United have clearly missed.

Imagine Cunha dropping into space, Mbeumo moving inside and Rashford immediately making a run behind the defence.

Those movements can force defenders into difficult decisions.

Do they follow Cunha? Do they stay with Mbeumo? Do they track Rashford’s run?

That uncertainty is exactly what United need in the final third.

Patience will be important

Rashford’s return shouldn’t be viewed as a magic solution to every attacking problem, however.

United still need to improve their overall attacking structure, chance creation and consistency. The midfield must provide the forwards with quality service, while the front three need to continue developing their understanding.

But there is no doubt that Rashford’s presence can add another important weapon.

For now, United supporters can only wait and hope that his recovery goes smoothly.

The international break could provide the opportunity for him to return, and if he comes back fully fit, his pace and movement could give United’s attack the lift it desperately needs.

Because at the moment, the frontline simply doesn’t look the same.

United need their spark back — and Rashford could be the man to provide it. 🔴🔥
