🔴 Luke Shaw or Patrick Dorgu? Manchester United Face a Major Left-Back Decision
Manchester United’s situation at left-back is becoming one of the most interesting selection battles for Michael Carrick. 👀🔴
When Luke Shaw is available and fully fit, should he remain United’s first-choice left-back, or should Patrick Dorgu be given the opportunity to establish himself as the long-term solution?
For now, Luke Shaw should still get the nod when he is fit, but Dorgu is quickly making this a genuine competition. ⚔️
🔴 Shaw Still Has the Experience
There is no question that Shaw offers something United currently need: experience.
The England international has spent years playing at the highest level and understands the defensive and tactical demands that come with representing Manchester United.
When healthy, Shaw can contribute both defensively and during United’s build-up play. His ability to read the game and provide composure from the back gives him an advantage over a younger player who is still developing.
The problem, however, has always been availability.
United cannot rely on Shaw being fit for every important fixture, which makes having a capable alternative absolutely essential.
⚡ Dorgu Has the Physical Tools
Patrick Dorgu represents a completely different profile.
The youngster has pace, strength, aggression and the willingness to attack from deep. Those qualities can make him extremely dangerous in the modern Premier League.
His performance during United’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah was another opportunity for him to demonstrate his potential after being trusted from the start with Shaw unavailable.
However, his development is still ongoing.
The Manchester derby highlighted one area where Dorgu must improve. His positioning contributed to the situation that allowed Erling Haaland to remain onside for Manchester City’s decisive goal.
That mistake should not define his United career. ❌
Instead, it should be viewed as part of the learning process for a young defender trying to establish himself at the highest level.
👀 Carrick Should Avoid Rushing the Decision
Manchester United do not necessarily need to choose between Shaw and Dorgu immediately.
The smarter approach could be to use both players depending on fitness, opposition and tactical requirements.
Shaw can provide experience and stability when available, while Dorgu can continue receiving important minutes and learning from his mistakes.
That competition could ultimately benefit both players — and more importantly, Manchester United.
If Dorgu can improve his defensive positioning and decision-making while maintaining his physical and attacking qualities, his ceiling could be extremely high. 🚀
🔥 The Ideal Situation for United
For me, the current situation should look like this:
🔴 Luke Shaw: First-choice when fully fit
⚡ Patrick Dorgu: Serious competition and rotation option
🚀 Dorgu: Potential long-term successor
United should not automatically make Dorgu the permanent starter simply because Shaw has struggled with fitness.
At the same time, Dorgu must be given enough opportunities to prove that he can eventually take the position.
The competition should be healthy.
If Shaw stays fit, he starts for now.
But Dorgu should be pushing him every single week.
Because if the youngster combines his pace and power with greater defensive discipline, Manchester United could eventually have a top-class left-back ready to own that position for years. 🔴🔥
What do you think — should Carrick stick with Shaw when fit, or is it time for Dorgu to become United’s first-choice left-back? 👇
