Kobbi mainoo Reveals to Michael carrick never to… see more

Kobbie Mainoo Is Finally Showing His True Level at Manchester United

Kobbie Mainoo has never really been given the luxury of enjoying a full Premier League season as an undisputed first-choice starter.

That context is important when judging the 21-year-old midfielder.

During the first half of the 2025/26 campaign, Ruben Amorim rarely used Mainoo consistently. Then Michael Carrick took charge, the tactical setup changed, and suddenly Mainoo became a much more regular figure in the Manchester United midfield.

Even then, injuries interrupted his progress, and he finished the campaign with 16 Premier League starts from 28 appearances.

The World Cup brought another disruption. Mainoo was unused throughout the tournament before suffering a late niggle, once again preventing him from building the kind of uninterrupted rhythm young midfielders need.

But what we are seeing from Mainoo right now feels different.

Since coming off the bench against Hull, he has started Manchester United’s last three matches and has looked increasingly like the midfielder many United supporters believed he could become.

The numbers tell part of the story.

Mainoo has completed 201 of 211 passes across those three games, demonstrating just how secure he has become in possession. Against Ipswich and Everton, his defensive contribution was also noticeably stronger, while his assist against Everton showed that he can influence matches beyond simply recycling possession.

Then came the Champions League victory over Sabah.

Mainoo’s performance was less about spectacular moments and more about control. He dictated the tempo, moved the ball intelligently and gave United’s midfield a sense of calm that has sometimes been missing.

That improvement without the ball has also caught the attention of people inside the club. Michael Carrick and Harry Maguire have both highlighted the progress Mainoo has made in his out-of-possession work.

And that could be the biggest development of all.

A midfielder who already possesses Mainoo’s technical security and ability to retain possession is valuable. Add improved defensive awareness, greater physicality and the ability to operate effectively in a deeper role, and you suddenly have a very different player.

At just 21, that combination is extremely exciting.

Of course, we shouldn’t get carried away yet.

Manchester City will provide a completely different test this weekend. Mainoo will have to deal with a much stronger midfield, greater intensity and constant pressure. How he performs against elite opposition will tell us much more about whether this current run represents genuine development or simply a purple patch.

But if Mainoo stays fit, continues playing in this deeper role and maintains the defensive improvements we have seen recently, then the conversation around his ceiling could change dramatically.

This is already the best sustained version of Kobbie Mainoo we have seen.

Now he needs to prove he can maintain it.

And if he does, Manchester United may finally have the elite midfielder many believed they were getting all along. 🔴

What do you think, United fans? Is Kobbie Mainoo finally ready to establish himself among the world’s best midfielders?
