However, United shouldn’t sign him simply because Zirkzee leaves.
The recruitment team must first determine exactly what Carrick needs from his attack and whether Mateta’s qualities fit the manager’s tactical plans.
If the answer is yes, then Mateta could become a very interesting name to watch.
For now, though, this remains a potential scenario rather than a completed Manchester United transfer.
